&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;His concentrated, atmospheric pictures of the last years – which are digital photographs produced between 2006 and 2009 – often indicate the view from a window, often denoted as a dark frame or the surround of a crossbar. At the latest since romanticism the window evokes the subjective condition of every observation – we experience the world through images. At the same time hardly any metaphor has shaped the view of images as much as the famous comparison of Leon Battista Albertis between an image and an open window, which allows the view at a world, expanded over the borders of the image. This imagination comes from the transparency of the picture, which requires the overcoming of materiality of the medium.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:12.0pt;text-align:justify;mso-pagination: none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;Like an echo of the actual image borders the window frame doubles the display window of the photo as a gap within the space-continuum. It structures the field of vision, serves as entrance into the picture and implicates the view from the inside to the outside, from a cultural to a natural space – bright snowscapes, sea surfaces, amorphous, hardly fixable natural phenomenons like air, light and water, visually pushing forward, just to bounce back again. Or it is simply concerned the plain fifties front on the opposite of the Munich apartment of the photographer, itself being structured by windows, reflecting our pre-framed view. Through the layering of framings, surrounds and gently nuanced shapes of areas the photographs sometimes achieve a composition which reminds of abstract paintings and makes evident the engagement of Dumas-Grillet with paintings as a dimension of photography. However, within the abstract images now and then signs of human activities become visible – for example we can discover that the window at the opposite front is open.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;Jean-Paul Dumas Grillet composes his photographs as interplay between framings and transgression of these frames, as successive shifts of boundaries. The window is not regarded as central subject but as threshold of different spheres, between what is in front and behind, between inside and outside, between seen and unseen, at the same time communicating with the photographic medium as intermediary. Apparently marginal picture details – like stickers – guide the viewer along the pictures surface and fix the paradox of at the same time given but deprived visibility. While the frame creates a rigid geometrical figure, the image plane acts as fragile zone, within which the tension between transparent surface and veil of the medium is newly evoked over and over. The photography itself could be compared to a veil, with its ambivalent structure of veiling and disclosing, presence and absence, of lacking and desire. Il faut voir les tableaux de Hopper «en vrai » pour comprendre à quel point leur matière est somptueuse. Les paysages sont d’une sensualité inouïe. Il y a une profondeur extraordinaire dans le rendu des différents plans par ce jeu des matières, de la lumière, des ombres. L’espace est lui-même une matière dense, charnelle, palpable. J’ai vu dernièrement un gros livre sur Hopper. On y voyait des photographies et des peintures que l’on avait pensé pouvoir rapprocher de ses œuvres, du fait que les sujets étaient similaires (une femme à une fenêtre, une station service), alors qu’une asperge peinte par Manet, à mon avis, en est plus proche, si l’on considère l’expression de la matière, qui est un rapport au monde plus subtil. Les rapprochements entre les œuvres mettent presque toujours en évidence la proximité des sujets, rarement (jamais ?) un élément plus essentiel qui serait la similitude d’une vision. Si l’on peut penser à Hopper en voyant mes photographies, c’est dans ce sens. C’est aussi cette impression de communauté dans la quête d’un blanc, qu’il soit pictural ou photographique, ou encore cinématographique, un blanc qui serait la plus pure expression de la tangibilité de l’invisible.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;GL&lt;span style="mso-tab-count:1"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;N’avez-vous jamais songé à être peintre ?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;JPDG&lt;span style="mso-tab-count:1"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;Oui, mais c’était avant d’avancer assez dans la photographie pour ne plus du tout y songer. C’est passé par ces scanners, ces fax dont je vous parlais, ces images agrandies jusqu’à ce qu’on n’y voit plus que du gris, du blanc voilé, ou du noir, ce noir d’encre, si lumineux, si profond. Je m’en suis imprégné, et j’ai vu apparaître des mondes vertigineux qui n’avaient rien à envier à ceux explorés par la peinture. L’étrangeté supplémentaire de la photographie vient de ce qu’elle n’est au départ qu’un moyen d’enregistrement objectif du réel. Pour moi le réel, dans sa « radicalité », est plus déroutant que n’importe laquelle des interprétations qu’on peut en faire. Et je pense qu’il faut être &lt;i&gt;dérouté&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt; pour avoir une chance d’élucidation.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;GL&lt;span style="mso-tab-count:1"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;Pourtant, souvent, un artiste se distingue par son regard, sa subjectivité, l’interprétation qu’il donne du réel.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;JPDG&lt;span style="mso-tab-count:1"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;La subjectivité ne m’intéresse pas. On ne peut pas l’évacuer complètement, mais se débarasser de son point de vue sur les choses me paraît essentiel pour, peut-être, en connaître la nature, l’essence. Moins exprimer un contenu subjectif grâce à une machine qui enregistre, c’est aller dans ce sens, et c’est ce qui me fascine. En réalité, il y a toujours quelque chose au-delà de ce qui a été enregistré, ou plutôt de ce qui paraît avoir été enregistré à première vue, il y a d’autres « couches ». On le voit dans le film « Blow up » d’Antonioni. À mesure que l’image est agrandie, son principal intérêt, qui était d’avoir enregistré l’instant d’un crime (une preuve), se dissout dans une espèce de ciel immense où les amas de grains sont autant de constellations et de nébuleuses inaccessibles, et pourtant contenue dans l’image, mais moins sous la forme d’une feuille, d’un tronc, ou bien d’un brin d’herbe, reconnaissables, comme à première vue. Plus tard, si ma mémoire est bonne, en retournant dans le parc où la photographie a été prise, le photographe retrouve dans l’apparence habituelle des arbres, de la pelouse, et des buissons, cette insaisissabilité qu’il n’a pu reconnaître qu’en effectuant les agrandissements, en pénétrant les différentes couches de matière. À force d’effectuer ces opérations, on s’imprègne de ce qu’on voit, et aussi bizarre que cela puisse paraître quand il s’agit d’un moyen d’enregistrement mécanique, comme la caméra ou l’appareil photographique, la conversion du regard par ce qu’il a vu dans les profondeurs où il a plongé, nous livre un réel qui n’est plus fermé par les apparences, mais ouvert, de manière étourdissante.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun: yes"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;GL&lt;span style="mso-tab-count:1"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;Gilles Deleuze a dit dans son « Abécédaire », je crois à la lettre R – résistance – que « l’art consiste à libérer la vie que l’homme a emprisonné »… J’imagine que c’est quelque chose qui vous convient ?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;JPDG&lt;span style="mso-tab-count:1"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;Oui. J’étais très ému quand, un jour d’été au temps maussade, séchant sur la vue d’une webcam de Jard-sur-Mer qui me bouleversait sans que je ne puisse en dire quoique que ce soit à la personne à qui j’écrivais, j’ai entendu ces paroles. Je trouve que ça peut s’appliquer à tous ces génies qui nous ont livré une parcelle éblouissante du monde, un jour, au mieux par surprise, et on s’est senti alors plus subtil, plus pénétrant – et aussi plus pénétré. Comme toujours, quand de telles épiphanies libératrices ont lieu, il y a un pouvoir qui cherche à établir un contrôle dessus. Ce qui est efficace, c’est de prendre l’apparence de ce que l’on veut contrôler, puis sa place.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;GL&lt;span style="mso-tab-count:1"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;Profitons de ces derniers mots pour revenir à vos photographies… Qu’est-ce qui motive une prise de vue?&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;JPDG&lt;span style="mso-tab-count:1"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;Je ressens une émotion, je vois des lignes, des masses plus ou moins éclairées. J’appuie. Il m’est arrivé de passer cent fois devant ce que je viens de photographier sans le voir, c’est très étrange. Il y a une disponibilité à un moment qui fait qu’une présence se manifeste, rien de mystique, rassurez-vous, mais c’est habité, c’est une forme d’épiphanie – j’aime bien ce mot. Les jours suivant, il se peut qu’il n’y ait plus rien, ou bien il va y avoir un écho un certain temps. En fait, c’est assez basique. C’est mystérieux et basique.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;GL&lt;span style="mso-tab-count:1"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;J’aimerais aussi revenir aux photographies les plus récentes, celles que vous faites avec votre téléphone portable. J’en ai vu cinq, je crois, toutes en noir et blanc. Et j’ai lu le texte d’Heike Eipeldauer qui y consacre une large partie. Elle souligne le fait que ces photographies ont quelque chose de monumental, alors que le téléphone portable est en général plutôt utilisé pour des prises de vue anodine, des snapshots.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;JPDG&lt;span style="mso-tab-count:1"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;J’ai toujours détesté au plus haut point me déplacer avec un appareil-photo, faire des réglages si je veux prendre une photographie. Le téléphone portable – Heike Eipeldauer le dit aussi – est un prolongement de la main, c’est presque un pinceau ou un crayon, c’est directement lié à la pensée. Je pars donc, et je ferai peut-être une photographies, peut-être pas, mais, dans ma poche, il y a un appareil qui peut enregistrer une vision, c’est important, car les visions sont éphémères, on ne revient pas une autre fois, c’est impensable. Je crois que je serais encombré par un reflex dans cette approche, ce serait comme une intrusion. Et il n’y a pas de vision par effraction. Il y a aussi une autre forme d’effraction qui est la qualité technique des appareils actuels qui vont dans le sens d’une domination de la technologie sur la sensation. C’est une autre manière de pouvoir quand c’est l’appareil qui fait l’image pour vous. Mais enfin, tout ça est très mystérieux, et c’est difficile d’en parler, il y a un désir de trouver une faille, mais à la différence des grains qui laissaient des espaces entre eux, les pixels n’en laissent aucun, et quand on agrandit, on se trouve face à un mur de briques impénétrable. Le téléphone est un appareil photo rudimentaire sur le plan technique, mais c’est en même temps ce qui lui donne cette capacité à saisir comme par inadvertance. On ne pense pas trop longtemps à la photographie qu’on vient de faire. Il faut revenir au texte d’Heike qui en parle très justement.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;GL&lt;span style="mso-tab-count:1"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;Il y a dans ces photograhies une étrangeté dont on ne sait pas le seuil de quoi elle est…&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;JPDG&lt;span style="mso-tab-count:1"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;Ce n’était pas si clair quand je les présentais dans un format plus petit. Tout tient malgré tout un peu au hasard. Mon ami van Handel a pensé le premier que je devrais en faire des agrandissements de la taille de mes photos habituelles. J’ai commencé avec une photographie intitulée « La Réconciliation » qui me tenait à cœur, mais là encore, c’était un hasard. Je suis allé voir Vincent, quand le tirage a été prêt. Je ne sais pas quel impression ça lui faisait à lui, mais la photographie, posée près de la verrière sur la table de présentation, dans une douce lumière, me donnait le sentiment d’être animée d’une imperceptible vibration. Cela était dû, je crois, à la juxtaposition de nombreux signes contraires. Des éléments étaient flous, d’autres nets, des parties de l’image flottaient, d’autres paraissaient gravées dans la stabilité de la pierre. Du fait de la rudimentarité de la captation, certaines zones avaient subi une dégradation de matière, quand d’autres en conservaient une trace encore fraîche et immuable. Cette stabilité suggérant un sentiment d’éternité, jouant avec la disparition programmée des éléments dans un retour certain à la poussière, produit un effet de basculement sur le point de se faire.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;GL&lt;span style="mso-tab-count:1"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;Les photographies brutes prises avec le portable sont ensuite retouchées…&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;&lt;b&gt;JPDG&lt;span style="mso-tab-count:1"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:Courier;"&gt;Oui. Exactement retouchées. Quand quelqu’un m’a touché, j’aime bien qu’il me touche encore, qu’il me re-touche… Il y a un contact physique dans le fait de faire des photographie. Ce qu’on appelle retoucher, et qui est très vulgaire, sans doute, quand il s’agit de fabriquer une réalité (de la trafiquer), devient presque de la sculpture si on a le sentiment de partir d’une matière et d’en extraire une forme par le toucher. Parmi les instantanés qu’il recueille au hasard de ses déplacements, il sélectionne quelques images, pour la plupart en noir et blanc, qui seront ensuite retravaillées à l’ordinateur, puis agrandies en grand format. Les œuvres résultant de cette &lt;i&gt;conversion&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="DE"   style="font-family:Courier;font-size:12.0pt;"&gt;, dans leur monumentalité, aussi bien que par leur présence, ou leur sensualité, s’opposent diamètralement au principe ordinaire de la photographie de téléphone portable. Celles-ci sont, en effet, en parfait décalage avec la révolution opérée par l’usage des photophones qui a introduit un changement radical de notre perception du monde, et de la façon d’en conserver des traces. Le photophone ajoute à sa fonction première de téléphone mobile, qui permet d’être constamment, et en tout lieu joignable, celle d’un appareil-photo numérique que l’on a en permanence avec soi, et qui nous donne le sentiment qu’aucun moment du présent ne peut nous échapper. Le photophone n’est pas destiné à stocker les moments de vie comme souvenirs pour la postérité, mais, plutôt, à capter des impressions rapides qui seront envoyées par mms comme la confirmation à l’autre de notre existence à un moment donné - à moins qu’aussitôt prises elles ne soient supprimées. Dans cette urgence à saisir l’instant, le savoir-faire technique, les réflexions esthétiques, sont secondaires, voire contre-productives. Et c’est désormais une photo bougée d’amateur, s’affirmant sans intention, qui a valeur d’authenticité, est proche de la vie, fait office de vérité. Jean-Paul Dumas-Grillet brise cette illusion, que les images se produiraient presque d’elles mêmes, pour ainsi dire automatiquement, sans passer par un processus de révélation. Tirant profit de la spontanéité intuitive que permet le photophone, il l’utilise comme un prolongement de sa main, saisissant à la manière d’esquisses, des impressions visuelles qui seront le point de départ de son exploration artistique. Par le travail qui s’ensuit sur l’image, la photocopie brute du réel sera revisitée après un temps de latence dans une approche méditative. Dans un lent processus de retouche numérique, Jean-Paul Dumas-Grillet recompose des partie de l’image, efface certains signes trop caractéristiques, accentue ou atténue les rapports entre les espaces, les surfaces, et provoque progressivement une distanciation entre la photographie définitive, qui est une sorte de &lt;i&gt;réapparition&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="DE"   style="font-family:Courier;font-size:12.0pt;"&gt;,&lt;i&gt; &lt;/i&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="DE"   style="font-family:Courier;font-size:12.0pt;"&gt;et sa référence au réel. Se souvenant des modèles de composition classique de la peinture, il conçoit ses photographies de portable comme des tableaux de maîtres anciens, mettant clairement en valeur les similitudes structurelles entre la photographie, la peinture, et le cinéma.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:150%"&gt;&lt;span lang="DE"   style="font-family:Courier;font-size:12.0pt;"&gt;Les photographies de Jean-Paul Dumas-Grillet montrent des vues intérieures de bâtiments qui frappent par leur vacuité, anonymes et débarrassés de toute trace humaine. Elles produisent une sorte de repos esthétique, à l’opposé de la photographie de portable, définie particulièrement comme „photo de la vie ordinaire des gens“. Le jeu de la lumière et des ombres rythme le regard, l’agrandissement de la matière première où vibrent les nuances de gris, de blanc, et même de noir, mettent à jour la sensualité de la texture de l’image comme une peau où se graverait le réel en trace de lumière, et ce, en dépit de la prise de vue numérique. Ainsi le réalisme supposé de la photographie est mis en doute, dans ce processus de retouche qui n’est qu’une autre manière de dévoilement, où des espaces en marge de la supposée réalité se manifestent.  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:150%"&gt;&lt;span lang="DE"&gt;Jean-Paul Dumas-Grillet entwickelt seine Fotografien in einer Dialektik des Zeigens und Verbergens. Seine konzentrierten, atmosphärisch dichten Bilder der letzten Jahre – es handelt sich um digitale Fotografien, die zwischen 2006 und 2009 entstanden – deuten oftmals den Blick aus dem Fenster an, wobei dieses zumeist als dunkle Rahmung oder als Einfassung durch ein Fensterkreuz angedeutet wird. Spätestens seit der Romantik evoziert das Fenster die subjektive Bedingung einer jeden Beobachtung – wir nehmen die Welt in Bildern wahr. Gleichzeitig hat kaum eine Metapher das Denken über Bilder so geprägt wie Leon Battista Albertis berühmter Vergleich des Bildes mit einem geöffneten Fenster, das den &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="DE" style="font-family:Helvetica"&gt;Durchblick auf eine &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="DE"&gt;sich jenseits der Bildgrenzen ausdehnende Welt freigibt. Diese Vorstellung geht von einer Transparenz des Bildes aus, die die Überwindung der Materialität des Mediums voraussetzt&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="DE" style="font-family:Helvetica"&gt;. &lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:150%"&gt;&lt;span lang="DE"&gt;Wie ein Echo der tatsächlichen Bildgrenzen &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="DE" style="font-family:Helvetica"&gt;verdoppelt der Fensterrahmen den Bildausschnitt des Fotos als Spalt im Raumkontinuum. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="DE"&gt;Er strukturiert das Blickfeld, dient als Einstieg ins Bild und impliziert den Blick von Innen nach Außen, von einem Kultur- auf einen Naturraum – lichte Schneelandschaften, Meeresoberflächen, amorphe, schwer fixierbare Naturphänomene wie Luft, Licht und Wasser, die optisch nach vorne drängen, um wieder zurückzuspringen. Oder es handelt sich schlichtweg um die karge 50er Jahre-Fassade, die der Münchner Wohnung des Fotografen gegenüberliegt, selbst durch Fenster strukturiert, die unseren „vorgerahmten“ Blick selbstreflexiv spiegeln. In der Schichtung von Rahmungen, Einfassungen und zart nuancierten Flächenformen erreichen die Fotografien zuweilen einen Grad an kompositorischer Bestimmtheit, der an Vorbilder abstrakter Malerei erinnert und von Dumas-Grillets Beschäftigung mit dem Malerischen als Dimension der Fotografie zeugt. Dennoch blitzen im abstrakten Bildgefüge immer wieder Spuren menschlicher Alltagshandlungen auf – so entdecken wir beispielsweise, dass das Fenster der gegenüberliegenden Fassade geöffnet ist.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:150%"&gt;&lt;span lang="DE" style="font-family:Helvetica"&gt; &lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:150%"&gt;&lt;span lang="DE"&gt;Dumas-Grillet entwirft seine Fotografien als Wechselspiel von Rahmungen und Durchbrechungen des Rahmens, als sukzessive Verschiebung von Grenzen. Nicht das Fenster als Motiv steht im Mittelpunkt, sondern seine Qualität als Schwelle der Sphären eines Davor und Dahinter, eines Innen und Außen, eines Gesehenen und Ungesehenen, die ihrerseits mit dem fotografischen Medium als vermittelndem „Dazwischen“ korrespondiert. Scheinbar nebensächliche Bilddetails – wie etwa ein Sticker – lenken den Blick auf die Bildoberfläche und fixieren das Paradox einer zugleich gegebenen und entzogenen Sichtbarkeit. Während der Rahmen als Grenze eine rigide geometrische Figur entstehen lässt, fungiert die Bildebene als eine fragile Zone, in der die &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="DE" style="font-family:Helvetica"&gt;Spannung zwischen transparenter Oberfläche und dem Schleier des Mediums immer wieder neu beschworen wird. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="DE"&gt;&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="DE" style="font-family:Helvetica"&gt;Die Fotografie selbst ist einem Schleier vergleichbar, in seiner ambivalenten Struktur von Ver- und Enthüllen, von Präsenz und Absenz, von Mangel und Begehren. Davon zeugt auch die Begrifflichkeit der Fotografie, die von der Schleier-Metaphorik geradezu durchsetzt ist, wie der Künstler immer wieder betont: &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="DE"&gt;so bezeichnet das französische Wort „reveler“ (enthüllen) den Prozess, in dem das Fotopapier aus dem Entwicklerbad genommen und zum Bild wird; „voiler“ (verschleiern) steht für die ungewollte Belichtung, den diffusen Schleier der sich dadurch auf das Fotopapier legt usw. Wenn Dumas-Grillet seine Bildoberflächen zusätzlich mit einer darüber gelegten grauen Schicht eintüncht, so insistiert er darauf, dass &lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="DE" style="font-family:Helvetica"&gt;der Schleier des Mediums nicht zu lüften ist, sondern im Gegenteil die Repräsentation erst hervorbringt&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="DE"&gt;: „La représentation est donc un voile, le voile une représentation.“&lt;/span&gt;&lt;a style="mso-footnote-id:ftn1" href="#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1" title=""&gt;&lt;span class="MsoFootnoteReference"&gt;&lt;span lang="DE"&gt;&lt;span style="mso-special-character:footnote"&gt;[1]&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;span lang="DE"&gt; &lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:150%"&gt;&lt;span lang="DE" style="font-family:Helvetica"&gt; &lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:150%"&gt;&lt;span lang="DE" style="font-family:Helvetica"&gt;Mit seinen &lt;i&gt;Portables&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="DE" style="font-family:Helvetica"&gt; erweitert Jean-Paul Dumas-Grillet seine Spurensuche seit 2008 um eine neue Dimension des Fotografischen. Ausgehend von Schnappschüssen mit seiner Handykamera, die er im Bewegungsmodus des Flaneurs unterwegs „einsammelt“, wählt er einzelne Bilder aus, bearbeitet sie anschließend am Computer und entwickelt sie in großformatigen S/W-Abzügen. Das Ergebnis sind Fotografien, die in ihrer Monumentalität und in ihrer starken sinnlichen Präsenz den Prinzipien der Handyfotografie diametral entgegenstehen. Dumas-Grillets &lt;i&gt;Portables&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="DE" style="font-family:Helvetica"&gt; antworten auf die Revolutionierung des fotografischen Mediums durch die „Handyfotografie“ – ein epochales Massenphänomen, in dem die Geschichte der Fotografie als eine Beschleunigung des Bildermachens zu kulminieren scheint und das gleichzeitig einen radikalen Wandel in unserer Art und Weise, die Welt zu sehen, uns ihrer zu erinnern, einleitet. Das Fotohandy vereint die Funktion mobiler Erreichbarkeit mit der permanenten Verfügbarkeit einer Digitalkamera und trägt in diesem Sinn das Versprechen absoluter Gegenwart. Handyfotos zielen nicht mehr darauf ab, einzelne Lebensmomente als Erinnerungen für die Nachwelt zu speichern, sondern vielmehr Eindrücke im Vorübergehen einzufangen und gleichsam als Beweis der eigenen existenziellen Gegenwärtigkeit erfahrbar zu machen, um diese nachher allenfalls via MMS mit jemandem zu teilen oder wieder zu löschen. In der Unmittelbarkeit des Schnappschusses mit der Handykamera sind technisches und handwerkliches Know-how oder ästhetische Überlegungen zweitrangig, wenn nicht sogar kontraproduktiv, gilt heute ein amateurhaft verwackeltes, vermeintlich „intentionsloses“ Bild doch gerade als Indiz für Lebensnähe, Authentizität und Wahrhaftigkeit. Dumas-Grillet bricht mit der in der Handyfotografie zum Ausdruck kommenden utopischen Vorstellung, dass Bilder von alleine, gleichsam automatisch ohne mediale Übersetzung hervorzubringen seien. Er macht sich diese intuitive, vor-intellektuelle Beiläufigkeit des fotografischen Aktes zunutze und bedient sich der Handykamera gleichsam als Verlängerung der Hand, um bestimmter visueller Eindrücke habhaft zu werden; diese instrumentellen Fotos setzt er wie Skizzen als Ausgangspunkt seiner künstlerischen Setzungen ein. Durch die anschließende Arbeit am Bild wird aus dem direkten, unmittelbaren Ablichten der Wirklichkeit ein verzögerter, reflexiver Gestus. In einem aufwändigen Prozess der elektronischen Bildbearbeitung retuschiert Dumas-Grillet detailreiche Bildpartien und individuelle Zeichen wie etwa ein Türschild, akzentuiert Form- und Flächenverhältnisse, scharfe und unscharfe Bildpartien neu und führt schrittweise eine Distanzierung der Fotografien von ihrem konkreten Wirklichkeitsbezug herbei. Im Rekurs auf klassische Kompositionsmuster der Kunst gestaltet er seine Handyfotos zu Bildern von altmeisterlicher Kunstfertigkeit, die die strukturellen Ähnlichkeiten zwischen Fotografie, Malerei und Film beleuchten. &lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:150%"&gt;&lt;span lang="DE" style="font-family:Helvetica"&gt; &lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;line-height:150%"&gt;&lt;span lang="DE" style="font-family:Helvetica"&gt;Dumas-Grillets Fotografien gewähren Einblicke in architektonische Innen- und Außenräume – Korridore, funktionelle Bauten, die auffallend entleert wirken und eine geradezu asketische Ruhe transportieren, bereinigt von Spuren menschlicher Präsenz und ganz im Gegensatz zur Handyfotografie, die sich überwiegend als „Menschen“-Fotografie definiert, eigentümlich anonym und menschenleer. Das Spiel von Licht und Schatten rhythmisiert den Blick, durch die Vergrößerung des Ausgangsmaterials werden zusätzliche Schichten von Grau, Weiß und Schwarz freigelegt, die den Abzügen eine sinnliche Oberflächentextur verleihen. Trotz der eingesetzten digitalen Techniken evoziert sie die Film-Haut der analogen Fotografie, französisch „pellicule“, in die sich die Realität als Lichtspur einschreibt. Mit dem Verlust dieser indexikalischen Materialität durch die Digitalisierung der Fotografie wird das Wirklichkeitsversprechen der Fotografie nachhaltig in Zweifel gezogen. Die immanente Unbestimmtheit der &lt;i&gt;Portables&lt;/i&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span lang="DE" style="font-family:Helvetica"&gt; schafft jene Spielräume und Potentiale, die über die manifeste Realität hinaus auf einen „Möglichkeitssinn“ (Robert Musil) verweisen.  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:CourierNewPSMT;font-size:11.0pt;"&gt;J’ai rencontré les photographies de Jean-Paul Dumas-Grillet soudain.  Comme il se doit. Par surprise presque. Une d’abord, celle d’une fenêtre, prétexte ( ?),  qui m’a ferré par sa simplicité d’évidence. Et sa rigueur, sa sècheresse mallarméenne. Sa géométrie parthénienne. Rien qui déborde, rien qui bave, rien qui ruisselle. C’est centré. Net. Concentré. Scotchant le regard. Mais ouvert par la perspective offerte sur tous les possibles, toutes les aventures... Bref, une photographie riche en elle–même comme peut l’être une peinture abstraite de Franz Kline ou une nature morte de Giorgio Morandi. C’est simplement beau.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:CourierNewPSMT;font-size:11.0pt;"&gt;Et puis j’en ai vu d’autres des photographies de Jean-Paul Dumas-Grillet, cherchées, sollicitées. Et à chaque fois j’ai été confondu par la puissance contenue de chaque image. Visages, arbres, rochers, miroirs, escaliers, portes, tables… chaque vue est un paysage mental. Précis comme chez Edward Hopper et Raymond Roussel. Indéfini dans son intension ( et son intention ), infini dans son intensité. Un sujet et une question. Une interrogation qui renvoie à sa propre mémoire comme à celle de l’artiste. Avec ce sentiment de « déjà-vu », ( plus savamment de paramnésie ),  qui est un des mystères de la perception ( et de la poésie ). &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:CourierNewPSMT;font-size:11.0pt;"&gt;Pas étonnant que Jean-Paul Dumas-Grillet cite dans un de ses portfolios cette phrase de Cesare Pavese : « &lt;span style="color:#222222;"&gt;Il faut savoir que nous ne voyons jamais les choses la première fois, mais toujours la seconde. Alors nous les découvrons et en même temps nous nous les rappelons » Ces vues, en effet, tiennent à la fois du conjoncturel, du hasard, de l’éphémère… (la rencontre, le passage, la lumière, le vent…) et du permanent, du stable et du constant. Fixé dans l’instant qui compte le temps se fait éternité.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;  &lt;p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;mso-pagination:none;mso-layout-grid-align:none;text-autospace:none"&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:CourierNewPSMT;font-size:11.0pt;color:#222222;"&gt;Jacques Bouzerand&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt; Les montagnes sont visibles au loin, peu enneigées, leur versant bleuté a, du train, la légèreté d'un papier plié.
